I'm in Singapore. I can tell you that it's extremely difficult to estimate the size of the wave, because MOH now publicly reports on a weekly basis only the proportion of respiratory clinic attendances who test positive. They released a (rare) case number estimate this time, but they don't tell you how they arrived at it (i.e. is it a projection or just raw positives?)

We don't know yet whether the wave is being caused by immune waning after a very long trough, or whether it's related to the takeover of NB.1.8.1.

I will say that although it's true that most of this part of the world has a different immune profile to the West because of years of zero COVID policies in the past, Singapore tends to be a bellwether for waves globally. If this turns out to be a sizeable wave, it's not unlikely to be coming to your shores in the next few weeks.

This is super interesting to me as someone who travels to Singapore once a year. I'm surprised they even have this data seeing as MOH lumps all acute respiratory illnesses together in their weekly bulletin. I asked them in February 2025 for any information specific to COVID or if they track COVID wastewater and they stated that it was no longer a high risk, so they did not provide specific data and referred me back to the same weekly bulletin.

UP TPR reduced drastically to 11.3% today from 19% a week back &amp; 14% yesterday..this is probably due to UP drastically increasing number of tests as well this week. UP active cases reduced (recoveries&gt;new cases) for the second time this week, that's good as well.

Bihar peaking at 14.4%, MP TPR marginally down to 20.3%, Bengal still hovering around peak at 31% from 32% peak, Karnataka at 23% down from yesterday's peak of 25%, TN hovering at peak of 12-13%..Haryana still very close to peaks at 26.7%, Maha very slow but steady down movement from peaks of first week of Apr, Guj lower than last year's peaks, but still at peaks of this year at 9%, Uttarakhand rising very sharply at 16.7%, Himachal also rising very sharply at 23%, Odisha again rising very sharply at 22%. Tripura's population - 38 lakh-ish.

Number of doses administered till now - 12.6 lakh. Thats a staggering 30%+ of the population. Out of which 3.5 lakh have got the second dose too, so Tripura has fully vaccinated 10% of the population.

Looking at the population and the number of 60+ people who got vaccinated, it would mean Tripura has covered a majority of their elder population.

This is pretty unique in North East, because other NE states have not covered that much.

It was billed as the beginning of the end for Nicolás Maduro. With foreign leaders in tow and the world watching, anti-Maduro activists gathered in Colombia in February 2019 with the aim of pushing entire warehouses worth of aid — flown in on U.S. military cargo planes — across the border into Venezuela.

Instead, the humanitarian convoy was violently blocked by security forces loyal to Maduro — the first in a series of miscalculations in the Trump administration's policy toward Venezuela.

More than two years later, the risky gambit is being questioned by a U.S. government watchdog. The findings were published April 16 but have not been previously reported.

The report focuses on the frenzied few months after opposition leader Juan Guaidó rose up to challenge Maduro’s rule, quickly winning recognition as Venezuela’s rightful leader by the U.S. and dozens of allies.

As part of that effort, USAID between January and April 2019 spent $2 million to position 368 tons of emergency supplies on the Caribbean island of Curacao and on the Colombia-Venezuela border.

Under Guaidó’s orders, the aid was supposed to be delivered into Venezuela in defiance of Maduro, who condemned the effort as a veiled coup attempt. But when an opposition-organized caravan that tried to enter Venezuela was blocked at the border, at least one truck caught fire, destroying $34,000 worth of U.S.-supplied aid.

As media attention turned away and Guaido’s fight to unseat Maduro unraveled in the months that followed, the U.S. assistance was quietly repurposed. In the end, only eight tons ever reached Venezuela, with the remaining 360 tons distributed inside Colombia or shipped to Somalia, the report found.

The report said the U.S. deployment of aid responded in part to the Trump administration’s campaign to pressure Maduro rather than just coming to the aid of struggling Venezuelans.

For example, the assistance was needlessly delivered in giant Air Force C-17 cargo planes instead of cheaper commercial options that were available, the report said. Ready-to-use meals to fight child malnutrition were also sent even though USAID’s own experts had decided the nutritional status of Venezuelan children didn’t warrant its use at the time, investigators said.

To bolster Guaidó, USAID — believing U.N. agencies had been co-opted by Maduro — minimized funding to the United Nations even though some U.N. agencies had infrastructure inside Venezuela to distribute the aid. A Venezuelan nonprofit organization, which isn't identified by name in the report, was awarded funding partly based on its alignment with U.S. foreign policy interests even though doubts persisted about whether it could meet the agency's legal and financial requirements.

The “directive to pre-position humanitarian commodities was not driven by technical expertise or fully aligned with the humanitarian principles of neutrality, independence and being based on needs assessments,” the report says.
